Corporate hackathons

Definition

A corporate hackathon is a large-scale innovation contest, usually across a division or the whole company, in which self-organising, cross-functional teams compete over one to five days to solve a business problem or address an opportunity.

Innovation Mode is clear about the purpose: “The primary purpose of a genuine hackathon is to produce high-potential, actionable opportunities.” Done well, a hackathon also lifts the innovation culture: collaboration, sharing and a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving.

From the method in Innovation Mode, Chapter 5, and the guides below.

Where to start

Hackathons draw organisers, participants and the executives who fund them. Each has a different question; each starts in a different place.
